Hail to the New Chief
Here at Florida State University, our student body is comprised of students of diverse backgrounds, unique perspectives, and different challenges. Every student on this campus has the potential to do great things in his or her life. In my efforts to represent you as Student Body President, I would like to take this opportunity to reach out to the students at the Florida State College of Law.
I am Laymon A. Hicks, a junior criminology major from Tampa, Florida. As student leader, I have faithfully served two terms as a student senator, been an executive board member for the Black Student Union, an Orientation Leader, an FYE Peer Leader, and am now the Chief Justice of the Student Judicial Board, a University Academic Appeals Committee Member, and President of the Lastinger Scholarship House. I have had a great experience here at Florida State as a leader and I am looking to continue that by serving as Student Body President. As a former student in the Summer for Undergraduates Law Program at Florida State, I got to live in your shoes for a month. During my time in the program, I had the opportunity to speak with many law students, whom I remain in contact with today. In my conversations with them, they have spoken of come concerns voiced by their fellow law students. Therefore, I am reaching out to you, to tell you that your concerns are my concerns too.
As the Student Body President, I represent you. Consequently, I believe it is time that the law students begin to feel at “home,” rather than feel like you are not part of the Florida State family. I am prepared to do what I can to collaborate with the Student Bar Association and the many organizations at the law school. I believe it is time to start seeing law students more involved with undergraduates, not just serving as justices on the Supreme Court and Election Commission.
Because of this, I ask that you fully support Torch and me during this upcoming Student Government election on Wednesday, February 27, 2007 online at sga.fsu.edu. As my Vice Presidential Candidate, Ryan Powers, would say, “It’s time we start expecting more from our student government, our university, but most importantly ourselves.” My fellow peers at the law school… it is time to fuel the fire, time to kindle campus change, and time to pass the torch. If you have any further questions, please feel free to e-mail me at laymonhicks@gmail.com. You can also find our platform on Facebook under the group “Vote TORCH! Vote Hicks/Powers/Harrison” In Laymon’s Terms… Get Up, Get Out, and Go Get It!
Sincerely,
Laymon A. Hicks
SGA Presidential Candidate (Torch)
